Cotto rarin’ to go

Puerto Rican puncher Miguel Cotto can’t wait to get his hands on Manny Pacquiao.

“I am eager to get back to training,” Cotto said as quoted by his legal adviser Gabriel Penagaricano Tuesdayday moments after Top Rank big boss Bob Arum formally announced their Nov. 14 showdown at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Cotto said he is looking forward to the Pacquiao fight, stressing that even if a scheduled bout is light years away, he keeps himself busy by working out regularly to prevent himself from going out of shape.

“I am truly excited to face Pacquiao,” said Cotto, who plans to report for training camp in the last part of August. His World Boxing Organization welterweight crown will be on the line although both parties agreed that a catch weight of 145 lbs will be imposed during the weigh in.

Arum has planned a three-city press tour that kicks off in Los Angeles on September 9 and this will be followed by appearances by Pacquiao and Cotto in New York on Sept. 10 and San Juan in Puerto Rico on Sept. 12 with a private jet to be leased by the Hall of Fame promoter to provide traveling comfort.

Penagaricano told the Bulletin that after the promotional gig, Cotto will proceed to Tampa, Florida, for the crucial phase of training under the strict supervision of chief trainer Joe Santiago. Also part of Team Cotto is the fighter’s father Miguel Sr. and veteran cutman Joe Chavez.

Cotto, 28, carved out a 12-round split decision over Joshua Clottey in his last fight last June in New York.

Cotto holds a 34-1-0 win-loss-draw card with 27 knockouts.

Pacquiao, 30, hardly broke a sweat in knocking out Ricky Hatton last May in Las Vegas.
