Mayweather Sr responds to Freddie Roach!

Pacquiao Cotto Updates
Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. spoke with 8countnnews.com Thursday night and responded to rival trainer Freddie Roach’s threat of a slander lawsuit against him for comments Mayweather made about Roach trained fight Manny Pacquiao.

“If that’s what he wants to do, that’s what he wants to do”, said Mayweather Sr., “I’m just saying what I believe and what I feel.”

Previously Mayweather Sr. had been quoted in hometown newspaper The Grand Rapids Press saying:

“I believe (Pacquiao’s) on some type of supplements. I’m convinced about a lot of (boxers). That’s what they’re doing right now. Everybody should be checked a little more thoroughly. Sometimes people know what’s going on but they ain’t saying nothing.”

Roach responded in an interview with 8countnews.com’s Brad Cooney saying, “We don’t take drugs. We don’t believe in drugs. We don’t need drugs.”

He went on to say, “I talked to my lawyer and there could be a slander case right here and we will sue him. “

He added, “I spoke to Manny about it also, and we’re all on board.”

Mayweather and Roach have exchanged verbal blows before. Prior to Mayweather Sr. trained fighter Ricky Hatton taking on the Roach trained Pacquiao, Mayweather Sr. referred to Roach as “Freddie ‘The Joke Coach’ Roach” and Roach accused Mayweather of trying to steal the spotlight from the fighters.

According to Nevada State Athletic Commission Chief Officer Keith Kizer, Pacquiao has never tested positive for illegal performance enhancing drugs in any of the mandated tests required to fight there. Pacquiao’s last five fights have all taken place in Nevada.

Manny Pacquiao's promoter willing to negotiate with Floyd Mayweather if both fighters prevail

Pacquiao Cotto 24/7 Episodes
LAS VEGAS -- Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank Inc., which promotes Pacquiao, said his company intends to negotiate in good faith if Mayweather and Pacquiao both win their upcoming fights.

"I agree that there is a public demand for it that you don't see often in our sport, this pent-up demand for Pacquiao and Mayweather," duBoef said. "I think it's because the names resonate globally, they've been in big fights, they've been in marquee positions.

"So I think it does have a totally different appeal that is just what fight fans want. I think if both guys win, we sit down and talk. If rational behavior prevails, which it has a tough time doing in our sport ... then the public will get it."

Mayweather will face Juan Manuel Marquez on Satuday. Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto will square off Nov. 14.

Pacquiao considers lawsuit against Mayweather Sr.
Pacquiao told the Phillipine Star he is considering suing Floyd Mayweather Sr. for remarks suggesting he believes the Filipino boxing star, and potential future opponent for the younger Mayweather, has used steroids.

Mayweather Sr. made the remarks this week to The Press in a video interview:

Floyd Mayweather Sr. called me a jokester and turned down my interview request

Pacquiao vs Cotto News
"Hey there jokester!"

That was the greeting Floyd Mayweather Sr. gave me when he answered my call today. He didn't even wait for me to say "Hello". Needless to say, I guess my recent articles and my body of work have been brought to their attention.

Question: What is the first name of the famous Kenny G.?

Give up?

Answer: John F. (think about it). Well since Floyd Sr. said I'm a jokester, I figured I tried my hand in it.

I admit, I have been critical of the Mayweathers, but I'm just calling it like I see it. But when some assuming people say that I am simply a Mayweather detractor, then I can't disagree any more. I have in fact called Mayweather the best boxer in the past, it's just that I think Manny Pacquiao is the best fighter. Then again, every person is entitled to their own opinion, interpretation and conclusion.

No real news here, just an update on my ongoing quest to try and get Floyd Mayweather Sr. for an interview to get his thoughts behind the whole controversy on the steroids statements he made against Manny Pacquiao.

"I heard the Filipinos are mad at me" is what he said in an interview with his preferred interviewer Percy Crawford at FightHype.com.

But when I urged Sr. to do finally do the interview that didn't happen a couple of nights ago, this writer was again turned down. I guess I will never get to do an interview with Floyd ever, but it's cool. It's not like I'm going to go Justin Timberlake and cry me a river.

At least my call was not rejected this time around. At least Floyd Sr. was kind enough to tell me what he thought about me and that is "a jokester." However, the real feedback however that I want together with the fight fans is about his, in his own words, honest opinion and belief that Manny Pacquaio is on some kind of "subtams". My friend translated it for me and said the word subtams meant "substance". (Add that to the growing D Source Boxing dictionary with 'malignaggied')

All jokes aside from this 'jokester', all I really want is the truth behind Mayweather's statements. I'm not here to make friends or be cool with all the cool kids in boxing. I'm here to write and give the readers what they want. And "the truth", is one of those wants. I wanted to ask what proof Floyd has to expose Pacquiao if he is indeed cheating because as big as FightHype's headline saying Floyd Sr. knew Filipinos are mad at him for his statements on this steroids issue, the interview didn't really yield anything about the topic. As much as I respect Percy as I myself used to write for FightHype and they're doing their grind over there, I don't know why they did not press Floyd Sr. to get more out of him on this highly controversial matter that the public has been definitely asking for. Then again maybe that's why they get interviews from Floyd Sr. and I don't. What do I know about the Floyd Sr. interview business right?

I can only guess why I don't get interview time with Floyd Sr. Maybe they just think I suck as a writer, or that my last name is too Filipino, or maybe I got a big head and that I may be taking subtams or I guess I just come off as a jokester. (Note to self: 1. Go to hospital and get checked. Maybe those 'Sisigs' and San Mig Lights have steroids in it and led to the enlargement of your head. But girls love my big head though and a lot of dudes pay a lot of money and buy those informercial drugs just to make their head bigger. 2. Quick joking around too much so you can get an interview with Floyd Sr.)

Okay, here's my attempt.

Somehow, I thought journalism was about finding the truth. And if it isn't, perhaps I'm one of the few outside the loop in this hype-driven industry. I guess that's why Floyd Sr. thinks I'm funny- or a jokester- ya digg?!

Freddie Roach fires back against Floyd Mayweather Sr. Regarding Steroid Rumors

Pacquiao vs Cotto Updates
Mayweather’s allegations have set off a fire storm of hatred and venom from Pacquiao’s supporters and follow up articles on the matter have only heightened the tension regarding the sensitive subject. I recently contacted Jeff Mayweather to get his thoughts on the matter and he pointed out that if anything, it’s the sport of boxing in a whole that needs examining.

Wanting to get a feel for what those in Pacquiao’s camp feel about the rumors I contacted www.8CountNews.com owner Brad Cooney early Thursday moments after he had made a call to the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, California and gathered up Roach’s thoughts on the matter. Roach was in a hurry, as he was set to leave to Florida and then the Philippines to assist Pacquiao with training, but was still able to get much off of his chest.

“All of a sudden Floyd Mayweather Sr. is an expert on steroids?” Roach would fire off right from the bat. “If that’s the case than please tell me what he was taking Floyd?”

Wanting to further prod at Mayweather Sr., who happened to be the head trainer for Ricky Hatton this past May when the Manchester native was leveled in two rounds by Pacquiao, Roach pointed out the obvious.

“It had nothing to do with the perfect left hand that he fired on your fighter’s chin?” Roach snipped. “As far as I am concerned Floyd Mayweather Sr. isn’t the best trainer in the sport, he’s the worst in the sport.”

As his passions grew more and more, Roach again pointed out his belief in not only Manny Pacquiao, but also in the meaning of ethics as well. Roach would go on to state that he has been talking to his lawyers and that a possible slander case could be pending. When Manny Pacquiao was informed of the news he was said to be in complete agreement with Roach.

While this has created quite a negative buzz for many involved, Roach still seems stumped when looking for answers. All he can come up with is that success breeds hate.

“There’s an always an excuse as to why you lost and he’s just looking for excuses. We don’t take drugs. We don’t need drugs. And we definitely don’t believe in drugs.”

Manny Pacquiao team fumbles on Floyd Mayweather Sr. rants

If leather lunged Keith Jackson was “announcing” the Papa Mayweather charges about Manny Pacquiao is on steroids and maybe HGH furor, he would be talking about Pacman the way he used to about running back Herschel Walker.

“That Megamanny…well, he’s just a horse and a half,” the ABC Sports gamecaller would intone. “Look at him go! Whoa, Nelly!”

As for the ongoing flap about Mayweather’s mouthings, KJ would compare it to a Georgia Tech home game going right down to the wire.

“It’s a barnburner!” KJ would shout.

In his latest tirade, Poppa M went into a brand new bag, alleging that the Pinoy Idol may have used a cocktail combo of HGH and steroids.

Well, here’s what this former ABC Sports producer says about the whole mess:

“Fumble, Team Pacquiao! I do believe the Mayweathers have recovered the ball.”

I know some of you more overt Pacjewelhuggers will say, there goes AWG, Average White Gorilla, nitpicking the Pacman team once again. There goes Marley the faultfinder and player of the blame game.

That would be so wrong but you emotionally stunted people will go there. Please stay there and do not pollute the comment section which is so well maintained by Bernie Vee, Arcadia, #1floydfan and a few other stalwarts. (Bernie Vee says he may watch "Darna" on GMA and opt out of the Marquez-Mayweather dance. Perhaps BV enjoys the great costume, I don't know.)

Where did the Whacky Packy crew err? So delighted you asked.

Like this:

1. One denial. Pacman himself should have been the only one to deny this unless conditioning guru Alex Ariza was prepared to do so. Too many comments from the peanut gallery are muddying the waters. Ariza, ostensibly an expert, should be able to demolish Floyd Senior’s rants.

2. Botched PR technique. Freddie Sternburg competently reps Top Rank in terms of Manny PR but who is Pacman’s own spokesperson? Is there such a person?

3. Ignore. The key word, after one blanket denial from MP and/or Ariza, should’ve been to ignore windbag Mayweather. Instead, this has been given the kind of attention the Pope would get if he suddenly announced he was becoming a Baptist.

4. Fact sheet. Pacquiao was tested for banned drugs by the Nevada commission after he fought Hatton May 2 whereas in retirement L’il Floyd has had no such tests in his 21 month hiatus. So who can say he’s surely clean, at least clean as of that May 2 date? Manny can.

5. Trash talk as opposed to libel. There’s a big difference. Any layman knows that so all this chatter about sueing Papa M is needless noise.

The best response on this so far has been Coach Freddie Roach’s jock reply.

“Look at the scoreboard!” Coach Roach yelled, referring to how he and Megamanny trampled Floyd Sr. and Hatton on May 2.

Btw, if you bet that fight to go over six minutes, you lost.

Finally, Pacman inflating himself with drugs, at the end of the day, is just more grist for the publicity mill.

Over in Naptown, the always alert Prof. Guillermo labels Mayweather's rants as boxing hype but considers the speaker a gutter rat sort of individual.

Coming: March 2010, Megamanny against L’il Floyd.

As KJ would say, “Now that’s one horse against another. That’s going to be a barn, barn, barnburner!

“Whoa, Nelly!”

Roach confirms slander case against Mayweather Sr in the works

Pacquiao vs Cotto News
Hall of fame boxing trainer Freddie Roach has confirmed to this writer that a slander case is in the works against Floyd Mayweather Sr. Recently, Mayweather Sr went on the record and accused the pound for pound king, Manny Pacquiao of taking illegal steroids. In response to these allegations,, Roach said, " All of the sudden Floyd Mayweather Sr is an expert on steroids? Tell me what kind of steroids Manny is taking Floyd? Tell me how much you know about steroids, first of all. Steroids had nothing to do with the perfect right hand that Manny landed on your fighter, because you didn't teach him how to get out of the way."

Roach is infuriated with these allegations, and goes on to say, " That same punch that we landed on your fighter, is the same one that we'll land on your son, and we'll pass a drug test because we don't take drugs, we don't believe in drugs, and we don't need drugs!"

Roach confirms slander case in the works.

"I am going to talk to my lawyer, there could be a slander case here, and we will sue him. I talked to Manny, and I talked to an attorney, and we are all on board here. This is all over the place now that Manny is on steroids, it's defaming his name."

Roach BLASTS Mayweather

"Get a flghter Floyd, and you will ruin him too. He ruined Ricky Hatton, Ricky was so much better than before Mayweather Sr got him. Not the best trainer, I think Floyd is the F*#@ worst trainer in the world!"

Pacquiao denies doping, mulls filing raps vs. accuser

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has belied claims that he is using illegal supplements, including the banned substance steroids, to gain an unfair advantage in fights.

The accusation was made by flamboyant trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr., who worked the corner of Ricky Hatton for the bout with Pacquiao last May. Mayweather, in an interview with the Grand Rapids Press, said he believes the Filipino is taking illegal supplements.

“I believe he’s (Pacquiao) on some type of supplements. I’m convinced about a lot of (boxers),” the brash trainer said. “That’s what they’re (Pacquiao camp) doing right now. Everybody should be checked a little bit more thoroughly. Sometimes people know what’s going on but they ain’t saying anything.

Mayweather’s claims may have stemmed from the fact that he witnessed first hand how Pacquiao demolished Hatton easily during their fight — where the current pound-for-pound king’s speed was simply too much for the British slugger to handle.

But against his son Floyd Jr., the older Mayweather said Pacquiao will lose if ever they meet in the ring — steroids or none.

“I don’t think he can beat Lil’ Floyd with steroids in him or not,” he said. “He don’t have that kind of talent. He don’t have that kind of skill, whatever he has in him.”

Pacquiao, for his part, insisted he always fights cleanly, even stressing that he doesn’t know anything about steroids.

“I don’t even know how it looks and what color it is,” Pacquiao said in a TV interview shortly after arriving at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport this morning (Sept. 17).

The IBO junior welterweight champion added that he has already instructed his lawyer, Jeng Gacal, to study any possible legal action they can take against Mayweather.

“We’re thinking of suing him (Mayweather) for what he said,” he added.

Pacquiao is back in the Philippines after wrapping up a back-breaking press tour that took him and upcoming opponent Miguel Cotto to five cities — New York, Caguas in Puerto Rico, and San Francisco, Beverly Hills and San Diego in California.

He, along with trainer Freddie Roach, will head to Baguio City tonight to kick-off his eight-week training camp.

Pacquiao and Cotto will slug it out on Nov. 14 (Nov. 15 in Manila) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR.: "I HEAR THE FILIPINOS ARE MAD AT ME"

Pacquiao vs Cotto Updates
"Lil Floyd look sharp, man. If what he's doing in the gym carries over to the ring, it's going to be ugly. He tearing people ass up in the gym and that's with the big gloves. When he puts those small gloves on, it's going to be trouble. He's ready though man. He's been sharp…I hear the Filipinos are mad at me," stated world-renowned trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. just days before his son's upcoming return to the ring this Saturday. Check out what he had to say about the fight and his recent claim that "Pacquiao is on something."

PC: Big Floyd, how are you man?

FM: Everything is good Percy. How about you?

PC: I've been doing good man. I just wanted to catch up with you before the fight. How are you feeling?

FM: I feel okay now, but I didn't go to the press conference today because I wasn't feeling good. That's the way it is with me with this disease. If I don't feel like going, I don't go.

PC: I never understood the point of a pre-fight press conference anyway. It's truly nothing left to say 2 days before the weigh-ins.

FM: I know. It's time to fight now, shit! All of the talking is over with.

PC: How is Lil Floyd looking in your eyes?

FM: Lil Floyd look sharp, man. If what he's doing in the gym carries over to the ring, it's going to be ugly. He tearing people ass up in the gym and that's with the big gloves. When he puts those small gloves on, it's going to be trouble. He's ready though man. He's been sharp.

PC: I saw you educating Eddie Murphy.

FM: Yeah, it was cool to hang out with him. He's alright. Him and Johnny Gill were there.

PC: Oh okay. Do you think there's anything behind the piss drinking thing?

FM: Man, let me tell you something man. That's nothing but waste leaving your body. That's the case, he might as well eat his own poop poop. It's nothing good come from that man, come on.

PC: I'll be honest with you, I've asked a lot of people for their prediction and I haven't gotten anyone to pick Marquez over Lil Floyd yet, but a couple of people believe Cotto can beat Pacquiao.

FM: I think he can too. Man, let me tell you something man, Clottey ain't nothing to play with. Everybody going off of Cotto's performance over Clottey, but I think Clottey would beat Pacquiao. That motherfucker ain't no joke man. Cotto could definitely beat Pacquiao. Pacquiao better take him serious because one thing about Lil Floyd, he works his ass off. People talking about wanting to see Pacquiao fight my son, let me tell you man, Lil Floyd would pick Pacquiao's ass apart. Shit, Marquez picked him apart. But I'm going to tell you man, I think Pacquiao is on something.

PC: I was going to ask you about the comments you made about thinking Pacquiao was on steroids. You ruffled some feathers.

FM: (Laughing) I hear the Filipinos are mad at me.

PC: Yeah, they're not going to be sending you any Christmas cards.

FM: Man, I'm telling you man, he puts on that weight too fast and it's too lean. They need to start checking him man and monitoring him better.

PC: I won't hold you up any longer. Get you some rest my man. I was just wishing you luck and checking on you.

FM: Alright Percy well you know I appreciate it and take care of yourself man.

Security tightened for Pacquiao practice in Baguio gym

Police tightened security at a gymnasium in Baguio City where Filipino boxing champ Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao will train in preparation for his bout with Miguel Cotto this November.

Radio dzRH reported that city police have secured the gym at Teachers' Camp so that Pacquiao will not be distracted by people who want to watch him train.

Baguio City Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. appealed to city residents to cooperate with the security measures so Pacquiao can concentrate on his training.

Pacquiao is due to face Cotto on November 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

His last ring victory was on May 3, when he knocked out Ricky Hatton.

Cotto, a native of Puerto Rico, is the present World Boxing Organization welterweight champion.

Earlier Pacquaio assured his supporters that he would be 100-percent prepared for his November fight, amid concerns that he is not taking his training seriously. - GMANews.TV

Note to Mayweathers: Prove your statements or else stop destroying Boxing

Pacquiao vs Cotto Photos
For the record, I have spoken to Floyd Mayweather Sr. to try and get his comments on the video that was recently leaked about his insinuations that boxing's pound-for-pound best fighter and it's current biggest star Manny Pacquiao is on some kind of performance enhancing supplements.

Sr. asked me to call him back after an hour when I phoned him last night around 7 pm Pacific time since he said he was on the highway driving. When I called back however, this writer's call was rejected and after a few more failed attempts to try and get Sr. back on the line, I left a message for a callback.

As of press time, I still haven't received a return call. Granted, the Mayweathers are busy preparing for the showdown in Las Vegas this weekend between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez, but this scribe will keep trying in pursuit of the TRUTH.

Or perhaps this steroids issue that Floyd Mayweather Sr. and as further supported by his brother Jeff Mayweather has finally made Floyd Mayweather Sr. think twice before he speaks his mind.

Let me try and put things in perspective a little bit. When Floyd Sr. accused the best and biggest name in boxing right now of "cheating" and when his brother Jeff supported it saying a lot of other people inside boxing share the same sentiment and that boxers get away with stuff like that and that they are untraceable by the sport's governing bodies, that does not only put question on Pacquiao's character, but the sport of boxing as a whole.

Such bold statements should be backed up by names, proof and accountability. This is professional boxing. Fighters work hard and sacrifice a lot just to get to a respectable level and to try and taint that with such irresponsible accusations is downright dirty. And Pacquiao of all people in the sport has displayed exemplary character and has helped thousands of people around the world. Such a statement is damning to his reputation. So if Pacquiao's physique get defined, he automatically does steroids? What about Floyd Mayweather Jr.? What about any other ripped fighter out there? So we want people to assume that regardless of how hard a person trains, if he gets ripped, and despite of tests conducted by boxing's sanctioning bodies, that he could be using some kind of steroid?

Don't get me wrong, I play no sides. If the Mayweathers can prove that Pacquiao is indeed a cheater, then I will sing their praises because as a sports fan, I despise nothing more than cheaters. Ehem. ehem Antonio Margarito.

We need to know the truth.

That's why I'm trying to get to the bottom of this. It doesn't even have to be me. I challenge my fellow boxing writers who are good around the Mayweather circles to try and get Floyd Sr. to back up his statements if not, lay this issue to rest and release a retraction, explanation, clarification or some kind of Kanye West type of apology for the sake of the integrity of all boxers who are now brought under the microscope because of these accusations.

Two nights ago when I first penned my thoughts on this, I ended by saying this can only get ugly. Well right now, somehow, somewhere I hear some lawyers drafting a law suit. You got to remember, Pacquiao is running for politics in his home country and accusations of being a cheater will almost spell certain defeat so I doubt he will let this issue slide easily. Maybe it's just my imagination, but I doubt it.

My Rebuttal to Pacland: My Honest feelings about Manny Pacquiao

When I woke up Wednesday morning and came to my computer I must confess I was a little shocked in more ways than one. The night prior I had penned a piece titled Jeff Mayweather: 'Others have accused Pacquiao of cheating but there is a bigger problem' (www.examiner.com/x-22973-Miami-Boxing-Examiner~y2009m9d16-Jeff-Mayweather-Other-have-accused-Pacquiao-of-cheating-but-theres-a-bigger-problem) The article was a quick follow up to the well known Floyd Mayweather Sr. accusations against Manny Pacquiao, claiming his belief that the Filipino sensation was taking some kind of illegal supplements.

I followed up Floyd Sr.’s thoughts by talking to Jeff Mayweather to get a feel for his thoughts on the subject. Jeff went on to state that while he wasn’t in a position to accuse Pacquiao of anything, that he did feel there was a nationwide problem of fighters taking illegal substances to gain an edge. When typing up the piece I made sure not to accuse Pacquiao or any other fighter of illegal wrongdoing, and only give the thoughts that Jeff had to say on the subject.

Regardless of my intentions I have seemed to set off a fire with the article as several people, many of whom I assume are Pacquiao supporters, have put me under the bus, telling me that I will be ‘skinned alive’ for my biased approach, while also warning me that I am now a ‘targeted writer’ who will get ‘f***** up’ if I ever enter Asia or California. I could go on for a while about the type of messages that were expressed but I think you get the scope of it.

First things first, let me state a few things. I never once have accused Manny Pacquiao of any wrongdoing throughout his entire career. If you look back over my history of writing and over the years, I haven’t had much negativity towards Pacquiao at all. Below are some statements that I have made over Manny Pacquiao throughout his career, some of which have been through prior articles released to www.BraggingRightsCorner.com and www.8CountNews.com, while others have been my interaction via email, etc. The first snippet I have, which is the earliest journalist piece I remember having on Pac is from sometime in 2006 shortly after his rematch victory over Erik Morales. Here’s what I had to say…

“When his career is over I believe one of Manny Pacquiao’s defining rounds will be the sixth stanza in his rematch against Erik Morales. When Pacquiao lost to Morales the first time he was labeled by some as somewhat of a ‘one trick pony’ with much power and not as much ability to adapt. Nearly halfway through his rematch with the Tijuana great, Pacquiao appeared to be heading towards a loss but found something deep inside himself to turn the tide of the fight in the sixth round. This round will forever stand out to me as Pacquiao turned up the pressure and took control of the fight by bludgeoning Morales with power shots from all angles. He would carry the same momentum over the course of the fight, ultimately stopping Morales in the tenth. The win revitalized Pacquiao’s career but more importantly showed his true worth as a fighter.”

Towards the end of 2008 I was asked by someone for my thoughts on who was the fighter of the year. While not one to get caught up in accolades or pound for pound ratings, I had to give the nod to the Filipino native. This is what I stated…

“I think Manny Pacquiao is the 2008 Fighter of the Year. In March he pulled out a razor thin victory over Juan Manuel Marquez in a fight that was full of wild momentum shifts. Four months later he moved up to the Lightweight division and dominated gritty titlist David Diaz to snag the WBC belt. And to cap it off he shocked the boxing public with a stirring upset victory over legendary Oscar De La Hoya. All three wins were memorable and the Diaz and De La Hoya triumphs were clear and impressive. Pacquiao gets my vote.”

In late April of this year I was contacted by Brad Cooney, owner and editor of www.8CountNews.com, for my thoughts on the highly anticipated Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton battle in Las Vegas. This was my prediction for the bout…

“I think Manny Pacquiao's speed and youth, being in the prime of his career will make the difference over Hatton. I like Pacquiao by late TKO, in the tenth.”

In April of 2008 I spent a few months with then Lightweight Champion Nate Campbell and his family. Campbell was fresh off of an upset victory over Juan Diaz in which he seized the IBF, WBA, and WBO Lightweights belts and was soaking in the spotlight that comes with being a newly crowned champion. At the time Campbell made it well known to anyone who would listen that he desperately was seeking a bout with Pacquiao and told others ‘he can’t beat me’.

Being around Campbell daily and listening to his verbal desires, it would have been easy for me look at Pacquiao as the enemy, but I never got caught up in it. When Campbell asked me what I thought of the Marquez-Pacquiao rematch I told him simply ‘It was a close fight. I think either guy would be a good fight for you’.

Wanting to get an opinion from someone in my position I contacted Indianapolis Fights Sports Examiner Dennis Guillermo (http://www.examiner.com/x-10947-Indianapolis-Fight-Sports-Examiner ) to get his thoughts on my article. Dennis, who is well known for his continued work in relation to Pacquiao and his connection to Nonito Donaire, offered up his personal opinion.

"I feel that your work is unbiased and positive," he stated. "I liked the article on Jeff Mayweather because of the way the piece was conducted. I wouldn't worry too much about all of the comments your receive, that just means your work is all the more unique."

After reading my interview with Jeff people have gone on to say that I am just a peasant boy to the Mayweathers and that I would do anything to generate hits and income for my ‘Examiner’ page. Fair enough but if that’s the case then I really don’t know why I have been stating recently over the past few years how Floyd Mayweather’s demeanor is ‘played out’ and that his braggadocios style isn’t something I am too keen on.

If Lil’ Floyd himself was to have been accused of taking illegal supplements I would have no problem following up on that situation as well. Anyone who takes a look at my previous Mayweather/Marquez related pieces for the Examiner can get the hint that I am much more appreciative of a humble warrior like Juan Manuel Marquez as opposed to someone like Floyd Mayweather Jr.

If there is one thing that I will concede it’s that I still have much room to grow as a journalist, despite doing this for many years. I try to go about my role as a writer with integrity and unbiased thought and I have told anyone who would listen that I would have no problem contacting someone from Pacquiao’s team to get their thoughts on the incident if the situation would have presented itself.

The thing I’ve noticed about Pacquiao’s faithful is that they are beyond passionate when it comes to their man and it serves as somewhat of a double edged sword at times. While it’s great to see them defending Manny, their reactions have often been a bit over the top. But to each his or her own, I say. All I do with my role as a writer is to get as many varying viewpoints as possible from people in the industry. If death threats and accusations are going to come my way, so be it.

In closing I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that Manny Pacquiao is my favorite fighter and I haven’t really gotten caught up in his craze like other people have because I am a fan of the sport first, and not fighters in particular. I also am not going to sit back and give any apologies for anything I have wrote about the man because I personally have never accused him of anything or badmouthed him myself. What I can do is give him the proper respect he has earned over his career, which is more than enough to warrant the mantel as the best fighter on the plant. At the end of the day Manny Pacquiao will have much said about him, some of it good and some of it bad, but my gut feeling here is that the allegations against him serve as just a small note in his illustrious career. What he is able to accomplish against Miguel Cotto and beyond is of much more importance.

GOLDEN BOY AND FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR LOST A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO MANNY PACQUIAO

The Pacquiao-Cotto Firepower five city promotional tour adeptly choreographed so close to September 19 by the marketing gurus of Top Rank were a huge success. It was not only received warmly by fans from New York, to Puerto Rico, to San Francisco, to Los Angeles and San Diego but also effectively diverted the attention from Golden Boy’s Numero Uno-Number One fight this Saturday. Top Rank’s Bob Arum, the promoter, is clearly making a statement.

The palpable giddy anticipation and overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from sports fans and the media greatly contrast the tepid reactions that the Floyd Jr. and Juan Ma’s 'Numero Uno-Number One' bout has been receiving from all sectors of the boxing world.

Li'l Floyd’s delusional rants and Juan Ma’s choice of vitamin filled beverage flaunted in HBO’s Award Winning 24/7 series do not seem to energize even the most passionate boxing aficionado. Just a mere few days before the fight, ticket sales remain meager at best.

If the Juan Manuel Marquez-Floyd Mayweather, Jr. fight is a patient, it is on life support and barely hanging for dear life.

But could this dying patient have been given an infusion of a life saving “medicine”?

Yes and it was free! A golden opportunity was handed to Golden Boy Promotions in a silver platter by no less than basketball superstar Shaq, a celebrity who transcends sports.

Although Shaq VS is by no means the surprise television ratings winner of the year, it is on free Network TV most likely watched by a good number of sports and boxing fans. Golden Boy could have easily made a deal with the Shaq VS producers and use the show as an excellent tool to promote Number One – Numero Uno.

Golden Boy should have demanded from Shaq that in exchange for his appearance, there would be subtle but maximum exposure for this Saturday’s fight. Instead, it was Manny Pacquiao who was given a prime time network national TV exposure when Shaq called himself Manny Shaquiao for last week’s Shaq vs. Oscar De La Hoya episode, an episode that turned out an entertaining “fight” between Shaq and Oscar de la Hoya.

With Shaq’s unabashed recognition of Manny Pacquiao, Lil’ Floyd ego must have been badly crushed and greener with envy than Kermit the Frog and the Incredible Hulk.

There are still a couple of days left. Golden Boy Promotions urgently must find the cure to save this looming box office and PPV disaster.

Mayweather Sr better have facts to back up steroid accusation

Pacquiao Cotto News and Updates
When Floyd Mayweather Sr told the world that Manny Pacquiao uses steroids, I hope the first thing that he did after that was to pick up his phone and call his attorney. To make an accusation like that, which clearly does damage to a persons credibility and good name, better be backed up with facts and proof otherwise face the very real possibility of legal actions. This statement, an unfounded statement, has sent shock waves throughout the boxing circles that has stirred up millions of angry Filipino's and American Pacquiao fans alike.

Manny Pacquiao is not just a great future hall of fame fighter, he also is a prominent figure in his county that millions and millions of people idolize. Pacquiao has earned his good name by overcoming trials and tribulations, by working hard and achieving goals that he put forth many years ago. Since arriving on the boxing scene, Pacquiao has defeated legends, future hall of fame prize fighters, and more importantly he has given back to millions of people not only in the Philippines but right here in America.

It's one thing to hype up a fight and to talk some trash back and forth all in good fun, but to outright accuse someone of taking steroids without providing any facts, or proof is a completely different story. This writer would not be one bit surprised if team Pacquiao responds to these accusations with a heavy hand, very possibly with attorneys in order to get to the bottom of this. Something like this should not be handled with kids gloves, this was a very outlandish accusation that will more than likely be responded to very accordingly.

There is a scripture in the Bible where Jesus says, "Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, with never a thought for the plank in your own?" Perhaps Mr Mayweather Sr should look in the mirror and evaluate his life, and look at the behavior of his own family before slandering or defaming another human being.

Accusations of Pacquiao's Steroid Usage are Just Plain Idiotic

Pacquiao vs Cotto Photos
Sep 16, 2009 -
Boxing is officially and unofficially filled with idiots. It's filled with idiots to the brim of brims.

It's recently come to my attention that several "geniuses" within the Mayweather camp have accused Manny Pacquiao of potentially utilizing performance enhancing substances in order to attain his effectiveness within the higher weight classes. It's one of the most absurd and baseless statements I've seen thrown awhile in quite some time being that Manny is one of the hardest workers in boxing whose body has simply matured over the years.

Back in 2006, in the moments leading up to his super featherweight trilogy bout with Erik Morales, Manny Pacquiao stepped on the unofficial HBO scale weighing in at a fit and heavy 144 pounds. It was an extremely clear sign that the "Pacman" was no longer the skinny "atom-weight" fighter we remembered at the start of his career. Just from simple observations, it's quite evident that anyone who gains more than ten percent of their bodyweight overnight leading to a prizefight probably walks around at a slightly higher weight in the "off-season".

This is quite accurate when it comes to the Filipino bomber being that he's been documented to enter training around the 150 pound weight range. The biggest standout feature in Manny Pacquiao's physical traits is his massive, tree trunk-like lower body attributes.

With a thigh measurement of 20", calf measurement of 15", and an ankle thickness of 11", there is no suprise to his ability to maintain his sharp footwork even in the higher weight classes. Unlike so many fighters out there that focus on enlarging their upper bodies with unnecessary weight training regimens, it's apparent to these eyes that Pacquiao has simply let his body fall wherever it should be naturally.

I remember thinking that if Pacquiao weighed in at 144 pounds on fight night versus Erik "El Terrible" Morales, I'd expect him to effectively carry himself somewhere around the 150 pound area should he focus on simply staying hydrated and allow his body weight to fall where it may. This is exactly what happened in his fight with Oscar De la Hoya as Team Pacquiao prepared their former "little" warrior by allowing him to eat as much as he wanted while training hard and diligently without having to struggle to make "dry out" to make weight.

It's a simple formula that any slightly educated and intuitive person could figure out.

Being that boxing is filled with nothing of the sort, I wouldn't quite expect anything different than these stupid and baseless accusations.

For those that would retort by stating that Pacquiao used steroids in order to build his strong base... you cannot build that type of thickness in one's ankles and calves by using roids. It's a trait that Manny has had for quite sometime... all you had to do was look!
I shake my head in disbelief in how stupid those within boxing can be at times...

MAYWEATHER HITS PACQUIAO BELOW THE BELT WITH STEROID ALLEGATION, BOXING FANS JUST SAY NO TO SEPTEMBER 19

Pacquiao vs Cotto Photos
The repetitive blows to the head of Floyd Mayweather Sr. have inevitably mashed his brain. The speech impediment is an obvious sign. It will not be surprising that in future TV interviews, there will be subtitles to help viewers understand him.

Even before the very first hit to his head, Floyd Sr, was not expected to articulate a scholarly dissertation but with his recent accusation that Manny Pacquiao is using a performance enhancing substance clearly shows that his intellectual capacity has reached nadir. There are no more neurons left to exercise any rational thought process. The space between his ears has become a vast wasteland akin to the day after a nuclear blast.

But is it really just the blows to the head? Or is it in the DNA. Even the most level- headed of the Mayweathers, Jeff, seems to give credence to the outrageous allegation.

If there is any performance enhancing substance Pacquiao is taking, it must be the world infamous balut. No need to explain, just Google it.

The Mayweathers are hitting below the belt. Boxing fans and specially the formidable Pacquiao fans worldwide, the Mayweathers can be hit where it hurts the most, the pocketbook.

Just say no to September 19.

V8: Mayweather, Pacquiao, Roach, Mayweather Snr., and more

Mayweather Sr. Says Pacquiao Has The 'Juice'

According to reports, Floyd Mayweather Snr. recently spoke of what he calls a "possibility" that Manny Pacquiao is taking steroids. The comment was made to David Mayo of the Grand Rapids Press. Mayweather's inclination comes as a result of noticing a trend of the Filipino fighter "twitching" more now than he ever has. Those looking to play devils advocate here have also pointed back to the fact that another prominent Freddie Roach fighter recently was caught using steroids - (James 'Lights Out' Toney). Roach is convinced that the only thing his charge is guilty of taking is "rice", and Pacquiao's statement on the issue is that it is a non-issue, for the simple fact that he "doesn't even know what that stuff is". Mayweather Snr. went on to say that he "thinks EVERY fighter should be tested more thoroughly", and that he "truly believes that Roach and company are pushing Pacquiao too much" in this pursuit for history and greatness. A loss to Cotto and that portion of his statement may be realized as a truth, but despite the muscular frame and the fact that Pacquiao has carried power up in weight like few others have been able to, I think we can all lay that type of speculation to rest. There is no greater impact to a fighter than a question of his credibility. Pacquiao and Roach have been very honorable and credible sources to this point. I'm not quite sure that I see this pursuit of happiness changing that.

Floyd Mayweather jr.: Mo' Money, Mo' Problems?

Fighter Floyd Mayweather returns to the ring this Saturday for the first time in 2 years. Speculation has run rampant about the reasons behind his return. Unconfirmed stories from various sources have began to surface about everything from him owing the IRS, to his having a vehicle repossessed. Critics have had a blast taking shots at the former P4P king without stopping to think two things. (1.) It makes no sense to blast Mayweather about returning ONLY because he's having money problems, for the simple fact that if he were to lose to Marquez, those same people WOULD NOT turn around and say that he lost because "he was only fighting for money and not motivated"; they're gonna say that his money issues are just another excuse. So which one is it? Taking shots at a guy you don't like just potentially takes away from what would be a solid effort from his opponent - Juan Manuel Marquez? (2.) The last time I checked, a man who finds his ability to support his family compromised who actually decides to get off of his 'duff' and go to work is something I thought we commended people for. Isn't it a bit funny how a person can be criticized for having money problems, and criticized even more for trying to go back to work and legally solve them? Face it, ladies and gents, yes, we hate practically everything Mayweather says when he grabs a microphone most times, but to find humor in him trying to feed his family (if that is the reason for his return) is a laughing matter in and of itself. We should all go look in the mirror and get in a good laugh, too, because if we feel that way, perhaps the real joke is on us! As journalist, it's best to be mindful of the fact that we all have bills to pay - just like these guys who sacrifice their lives in the ring; Which is why I refrain from tearing any fighters down. I wouldn't be writing now if I didn't have a family to feed. Does that mean someone is out there preparing an article about me too? (Think about it)

Pacquiao: "If We Fought Today, I Would Lose"

Manny Pacquiao has always been known as a very honest and humble man. That sentiment can only be realized more and more when listening to the unapologeticly honest statement rendered from the fighting Filipino a few days ago when he boldly said with integrity, "if we (he and Cotto) fought today, I would lose". A growing concern among many is that Pacquiao's outside distractions - shooting of a movie, commercials, and other activities - have put the Filipino behind the 8-ball in his quest to defeat Cotto. This was evidenced in what many spectators referred to as a very "round faced" Pacquiao who recently appeared at various press tour stops around the world to promote the fight. With approximately 8 weeks left to train for the fight, perhaps it's a great thing the fight "isn't today". The quest for Pacquiao to return to form gives him a mere 50 more (days) plus to do so. In the end, I think we can all be confident that he will, like he always has.

Mayweather jr. Ready To Reclaim P4P Status?

Saturday night marks the return of 'Prettyboy' Floyd Mayweather. It's been two long years, and a lot has changed since his unexpected departure. One of those things was a crowning of a new P4P king - Manny Pacquiao. In an era where belts mean less and less, it seems the only title worth pursuing is the mythical P4P title. Trouble is, until they actually fight and settle the score, it's hard to believe that the consensus will change from favoring Pacquiao in the matter to a notion favoring Mayweather. I guess we'll never know until the two actually square off and decide once and for all. Whether they get that opportunity to do so starts Saturday night in Las Vegas when Mayweather attempts to defeat a man that Pacquiao has struggled mightily with. And one way or the other, that possibility will end on the evening of November 14th, when Pacquiao faces his biggest challenge yet (literally) in Miguel Cotto. It will either end with Pacquiao solidifying his position in such a fight with Mayweather, or it will end as a result of him losing that fight to Miguel Cotto. In approximately 8 weeks we'll all find out.

MMA According to Bob Arum: From Skinned-Head To Skinheads?!?!

Bob Arum recently went on a tirade which outlined his deepest thoughts about the sport of MMA. Listening to the harsh sentiments of Bob, there's little question in the minds of some that something more personal is brewing within. While some may find a way to justify the things he said, certainly that choice of words wasn't what one would expect from someone of his caliber. Not only did he say MMA was "a bunch of skinhead white guys", but he also went out on a limb and said competitors in the sport are like "homosexuals rolling around on the floor". Some pretty strong words for a man who many greatly respect. Truth is, MMA fighters train as hard, or harder than boxers, so I don't find much validity there. But what I will do is concede the point to him that the fundamental skill of boxing is one that better suits my personal taste. With the sport of MMA being fairly new and still somewhat undeveloped, (in comparison to boxing), it'll be intriguing to see how the future of the sport unfolds. Either way it goes, I think we can all rest assured that contrary to Arum's beliefs, I'm sure it will contain more than 'skin heads', and I'm definitely sure we WON'T be seeing any homosexual divisions pop up.

Manny Pacquiao - A 'Superhero'

Pacquiao recently finished recording what will be known in the Philippines as "Wapakman", which is a superhero film where he flies and characterizes himself in a way like that of spider-man. Two decades ago, the fighting Filipino was merely selling donuts and cigarettes on street corners trying to help his Mother make ends meet. Fast forward a few years, and with a lot of hardwork and dedication, his estimated earning has put him on par with some of the top athletes in the world. As of now, we have no idea what his future will look like inside the ring, but considering his accomplishments to date, win, lose, or draw, he'll always be a superhero. Which is pretty 'fly' in and of itself. (Pun intended).

Don't Ask Freddie (Roach), He Simply "Doesn't Care"....(But Should He?)

Trainer to Manny Pacquiao was recently quoted as saying that he "simply doesn't care" who will win the Mayweather/Marquez fights because "they're both counterpunchers and will put you to sleep". If the past is any indication, that could bode true, but let Roger Mayweather tell it, fight fans shouldn't be surprised to see his nephew Floyd Jr. come out and "bumrush" Marquez, setting a vicious tone from the very start. Many have taken note of the fact Mayweather has gone down in weight from 147lbs to 144lbs, but has gotten bigger in size, as evidenced by the bulging biceps displayed on HBO's 24/7. Half of Mayweather's career, fight fans have criticized him for not being aggressive enough. It would be awfully interesting if this two year hiatus helped refresh his hands enough to make him comfy enough to convert to being a slugger. He was already one of the most talented guys in the sport. I can't imagine an rough edge as well. If he and Pacquiao do square off that would make quite a spectacle. I know with business lying ahead, Roach's attention is elsewhere, and if I were him, I probably wouldn't care yet, but oh yeah....I'd care...and I'd definitely be looking to see if this new 'change' takes effect. The rest of us definitely will.

James Toney - Slim, Trim, With A Future That's.....Dim?

Famed middleweight turned heavyweight James Toney recently returned back to the ring for the first in a while after a very tumultuous recent history in the sport which has seen him balloon in weight, get busted for steroids usage, and fail to make a splash all while doing it. Few can argue that Toney is arguably one of the best fighters of recent times in the sport, and has actually won fights on poor conditioning, based purely on ring intellect. How he stacks amongst today's heavyweights remains to be seen, but weighing in at a slim and trim 217lbs, which is the lowest we've seen him at in YEARS has to be something to consider, as a 90% James Toney can still be effective enough to face and soundly defeat much of today's competition. It'll be interesting to see what he does, but somehow, I get the feeling that I'll be one of the only ones watching.

Video: Floyd Mayweather Sr. accuses Manny Pacquiao of taking steroids, supplements

LAS VEGAS -- Manny Pacquiao may have claimed boxing's mythical pound-for-pound throne with wins over Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton while Grand Rapids' Floyd Mayweather Jr. was in retirement, but Floyd Mayweather Sr. says it wasn't without help.

"I believe he's on some type of supplements. I'm convinced about a lot of (boxers)," Mayweather Sr. said. "That's what they're doing right now. Everybody should be checked a little bit more thoroughly. Sometimes people know what's going on but they ain't saying nothing."

Pacquiao's next fight is Nov. 14 against Miguel Cotto. Mayweather Jr. (39-0) returns to the ring Saturday against Juan Manuel Marquez at MGM Grand.

A Mayweather-Pacquaio showdown could be on the horizon for 2010.

"I don't think he can beat Lil' Floyd with steroids in him or not," Mayweather Sr. said. "He don't have that kind of talent. He don't have that kind of skill, whatever he has in him.

"I think they're pushing Pacquiao a little too much, even if he's got 'roids in his body. The steroids aren't going to make him no faster. It's going make him relentless and hit strong, but that's it. It ain't going to put no knowledge in your head."

Arum: Pacquiao, Mayweather approach boxing differently

Pacquiao Cotto Photos
Promoter Bob Arum has handled the careers of both Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., and he has respect for both as fighters.

However, he said they’re completely different in the way they approach the sport: Pacquiao seeks out real challenges that result in big paydays, Mayweather seeks out the least possible risk to earn the money he wants.

Arum still promotes Pacquiao. Mayweather, who faces Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday in Las Vegas, now promotes himself.

“They’re different kind of people,” Arum said at a news conference Monday to promote the Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight on Nov. 14. “Manny is somebody who has great pride in himself and his country. He’s always looking for the next challenge. With Floyd, and he himself says it, he’s a businessman. It’s about money. For him, it’s risk vs. reward.”

And if that damages his legacy?

“I don’t think he gives a s--- about his legacy,” Arum said. “I think he cares about money in the bank. He says it himself; he’s “Money Mayweather.” If he can make a lot of money with little or no risk, that’s what he feels he should do.

“And there’s nothing wrong with that. But neither Manny nor Miguel have that mentality. They are really fighters. Marquez, too, no question.”

Arum also believes that fans gravitate to Pacquaio more than Mayweather because of his willingness to take risks in the ring.

“People want to see Pacquiao because he’s the most-exciting fighter in the world,” he said. “They know that when Manny Pacquiao fights, they’ll see great things. They see a guy who fights. Many fail to realize that people can look at a defensive fighter and say, ‘Hey, he has a lot of talent.’ But they don’t necessarily want to pay to see him fight.

“That’s the way it’s always been in boxing.”

Who wins Mayweather-Marquez? Pacquiao picks Mayweather.

“It’s a good fight,” he said, “but Mayweather is faster than Marquez.”

Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s long-time trainer, was asked the same question and he responded with a smile: “Who cares? They’re counterpunchers. You’ll fall asleep.”

Roach wouldn’t mind having his fighter face the winner of Mayweather-Marquez, though. Pacquiao-Mayeather, in particular, would be a huge promotion.

“We have a tough fight ahead of us,” he said. “We’ll take care of this one and then hopefully negotiations will happen.”

How will Cotto win? Cotto was asked repeatedly how he will beat Pacquiao and he answered each time in generalities, saying he’d go to camp, study Pacquiao and then make the appropriate game plan.

He would say, however, that he has one significant advantage going in.

“He’s coming up to my weight,” he said, referring to the 145-pound catch weight. “He’s coming from 122 pounds, 126. If he thinks the same thing will happen that happened with (Ricky) Hatton, he’s wrong.”

Of course, Hatton said the same thing when Pacquiao fought him at 140 and we know happened there.

Manny the actor: Pacquiao has been busy in his acting career back home in the Philippines the past few months. He recently completed a superhero film -– yes, he’s the superhero –- called “Wapakman,” which he compared to Spider-Man and Superman. He said he flies in the film.

And he has a weekly sitcom on television called “Show Me the Manny.” (Laughs.)

He insists that he’s shifted his energy to boxing, dismissing more and more questions about whether he has too many distractions in his life.

“The last month, the last few weeks I didn’t think about boxing,” he said. “What I had in my mind was to do the movie and enjoy it. Now, OK, I put aside the movie thing or whatever and focus on boxing.”

Roach found a positive in Pacquiao’s acting career.

“He had to stay in shape for the movie so he’s skinny right now,” he said.

Cotto the linguist: Cotto is one of the few fighters from a Spanish-speaking country, Puerto Rico, to recognize the advantage of learning English to market himself and then actually learning it.

He has had English tutors in Puerto Rico but also has another learning tool: His South African conditioning coach, Phil Landman, speaks only English.

“The only way I have to talk to him is in English,” Cotto said. “And I talk to him a lot. … I want to speak for myself. I don’t want anyone else [a translator] saying what I want to say. In translation, you lose a lot.”

Tactical fight? Roach said more than once Monday that we might not see the brawl or quick knockout that some people might be expecting.

“Miguel knows how to nullify speed,” Roach said. “He did it with (Shane) Mosley. We’ll have to throw a curve ball at him. It could be a much more tactical fight than people think because he’s a very smart fighter. People say he’s just a strong, rugged guy, but he’s very intelligent. He knows how to distance himself well.

“We do also. It will come down to who will implement their game plan and use it to their fullest advantage. We have the speed advantage but we have to use it the right way.

And …

“We don’t underestimate anybody,” Roach said. “We train for a 12-round fight. If a knockout comes, it comes. If you go out looking for a knockout, you might get caught yourself. It will be very tactical. Manny Pacquiao, at this stage of his career, can follow a game plan for 12 rounds. He’s very intelligent. He’s learned a lot along the way.

“At one time, when he was a little bit younger, he might get a little reckless and try to kill you with his left hand. Now he’s a more-complete fighter. He’ll fight a very tactical, smart fight.”

Roach isn’t talking with the same bravado he did before other recent fights because he respects Cotto, who he said will be Pacquiao’s toughest test in quite a while.

“He’s in his prime, I think,” he said. “He’s young and strong. But listen, we fought the (Erik) Moraleses and other great fighters. This is another great fighter we’re going against. Manny right now wants to challenge the best out there. This will keep boxing alive.”

The odds: The odds on the fight at the MGM Grand are -250 for Pacquiao, +210 for Cotto, meaning Pacquiao is almost a 2½-1 favorite.

Pacquiao and Cotto watch from the sidelines

Pacquiao vs Cotto
There’s no denying that the upcoming Floyd Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fights are linked in more ways that one. With a combined record of 172 wins against only 8 losses, including 126 knockouts along the way, the four men represent the standard for quality boxing in today’s era.

Coming from vastly different backgrounds, each fighter is unique and inside of the ring each man has stamped their own imprint on the sport over the years. It goes without saying that all four men will be keeping a close eye on one another as their respected fights take place, and with Mayweather-Marquez going down September 19th both Pacquiao and Cotto will be on the sidelines as spectators watching the contest go down.

These days it’s very easy to get a pulse for anything and everything that Pacquiao’s legion of fans are saying and feeling. Having great pride and faith in their native son, his followers have been keeping an eye on everything surrounding Mayweather-Marquez as Pacquiao is tied to both men in vastly different ways.

The names ‘Pacquiao’ and ‘Marquez’ will go down in history as being synonymous with each after their riveting and closely contested Las Vegas battles with one another in May of 2004 and March of 2008. After a draw the first time around Pacquiao edged Marquez out in the rematch based on the strength of a third round knockdown and a late round momentum surge. While Pacquiao’s fans may try to dismiss Marquez at times, anyone with a true sense of objectivity will surely realize how dangerous and respected the Mexico City fighter is after going nail and tooth with the Filipino sensation.

When the attention is turned to Mayweather, Pacquiao’s contingent lights up in a different way, as Floyd has become public enemy number one in Pacland these days. Combining god given talent and a huge ego, there seems to be no middle ground for Mayweather as people either seem to endlessly love him or publicly scathe him. To the Pacquiao masses Floyd represents not only a threat, but a man who seems to genuinely rub them the wrong way.

Cotto himself will surely have a keen eye on this Saturday’s contest as well, as there was once a time when a Cotto-Mayweather clash was the talk of the town. In late 2004 and well into 2005 and beyond people salivated at the chance of seeing Miguel and Floyd do battle. At the time Floyd was making his impression felt at 140 pounds with dominating victories over Henry Bruseles and Arturo Gatti while Cotto was busy dispatching a wide range of opponents from ex champions to fellow up and comers.

Well into late 2007 a Cotto-Mayweather showdown still seemed very much a reality but in 2008 things would change dramatically in each man’s career. Following a December 2007 stoppage of Ricky Hatton, Floyd would be surprisingly quiet for a while before announcing his retirement in early June. There were proposed talks of a Mayweather rematch brewing with Oscar De La Hoya in September but ‘Pretty Boy’ threw a wrench in the plans of many with that news.

The following month Miguel Cotto’s career would be temporarily derailed as he engaged in a much clamored matchup with Antonio Margarito. Despite getting off to a fast start and building up an early lead based off of his counter punching and boxing skills, Miguel began to fade the second half of the fight. Margarito continued pushing forward and would eventually leave Cotto crumpled in a corner in the 11th round, unwilling to continue. The TKO loss was devastating to Miguel in many ways as he not only lost much of his luster but took some serious punishment as well.

Following the Margarito fight it has been revealed that the ‘Tijuana Tornado’ was caught with an illegal substance that was removed from his gloves before his loss to Shane Mosley. That substance would turn out to be plaster of paris and Margarito would be suspended for a year following the incident. Not only did the incident shed a bad light on Margarito, it rejuvenated the entire Cotto fan base, which was quick to dismiss Miguel’s loss, given that it was handed to him by a ‘cheater’. Cotto has since won two fights in a row, the most recent being a back and forth affair against Joshua Clottey, and with Mayweather’s return the possibility of the two men one day meeting in the ring is much more of a reality.

Just as the background of all four fighters is strikingly different, so too are the gifts that they were blessed with inside of the ring. Pacquiao is known best for his relentless and unyielding aggression as well as his deadly left hand. Marquez stands out for his technical brilliance and his fighter’s will. Cotto can be described best as a patient stalker and his body attack is both brutal and beautiful to watch. Mayweather is perhaps the most natural gifted fighter of today’s era and his boxing instincts are second to none.

The core fan base for each man is drastically different yet ultimately and undyingly loyal at the end of the day as well. What goes down this Saturday night when Mayweather and Marquez meet and a few months later on November 14th when Pacquiao and Cotto clash will affect each man’s career as well as shaping the current landscape of the sport.

Some fighters like to say that they don’t pay attention to anything besides the fight in front of them but gut feeling here is that Mayweather, Cotto, Marquez, and Pacquiao will all be keeping an eye on one another, whether inside the ring or as an interested spectator. This Saturday the spotlight belongs to Mayweather and Marquez, and it will be time for Pacquiao and Cotto to watch from the sidelines as they size up the competition.

Roach: Pacquiao to Shutout Cotto

Pacquiao vs Cotto
Manny Pacquiao's irradicable coach Freddie Roach admits Miguel Cotto is a tough opponent to knockout, thus ruling out an abbreviated win in their November 14 punch out at MGM's Grand Arena.

Asked by PDI's fight analyst Hermie Rivera why? The hall of fame trainer replied, "While Manny bested some near-greats previously, Manny will hit and run Cotto (ceaselessly), and box him inning-by-inning (scientifically). The end result will be a terrific 12-round victory."

Speed kills, so the pundits say.

Team Pacquiao knows this by heart. Make no mistake about it.

A caveat -- size and power can neutralize velocity.

"Cotto is the stronger and bigger fighter. And Miguel knows how to nullify speed. Look at how he beat Zab Judah and Shane Mosely," cautioned Roach.

"Anything's possible with Manny's unmatched work ethic."

Pacquiao and Cotto played some baseball as little leaguers resulting in cross-over appeal.

Top Rank's Bob Arum is maximizing every available avenue in advertising.

"We have to be creative in promoting boxing. This could be the fight of the year. Heck, fight of the decade!"

Notes: Prior to the AT&T presser, Team Pacquiao played pick-up basketball at the Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. Interestingly, before the team boarded for the SF Giants baseball park, Manny personally paid the gym rental. In attendance, newly crowned world champion Anna "Hurricane" Julaton accompanied by her chief trainer Nonito Donaire, Sr. and manager Angelo Castro. This Philboxing scribe thanks Giants front office ace Kelsey Colvin for her help.
