'Pacquiao firecrackers' sell like hotcakes

Pacquiao key-rings also in the market

MANILA – With the holiday season just months away, firecrackers are starting to sell briskly again. Among the top sellers in the market is a new firecracker named after Manny Pacquiao.

The “Pacquiao Ultraman” is reportedly more powerful than the piccolo, a firecracker prohibited especially among children.

According to a report by ABS-CBN correspondent Maan Macapagal, the Pacquiao Ultraman is four times bigger than the piccolo.

Some of these firecrackers, which are being sold discreetly inside Divisoria Mall in Manila, were already confiscated by authorities.

Superintendent Nelson Yabut, Manila Police District station 11 Chief, storage of firecrackers especially in malls can be hazardous which is why it is prohibited.

Yabut added that manufacturers of Pacquiao Ultraman are merely using the Filipino champ’s name to sell a more dangerous firecracker in the market.

The confiscated firecrackers, including Pacquiao Ultraman, piccolo, great bawang and “pulling”, were immediately doused with water.

Keyrings for a cause

While the “Pacquiao Ultraman” is being sold in the streets, another Pacquiao-related item is being put up for sale, this time for a cause.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) announced its sale of commemorative key-rings of the first WBC Diamond Belt fight featuring Pacquiao and Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto on November 14.

The WBC said in a statement posted on Philboxing.com that “all the money raised will be sent for charity to the Philippines through the Games and Amusement Board chaired by WBC vice president Eric Buhain.”

“The WBC joins the world helping force just like we did in 2005 in the Asian Tsunami disaster. Extra donations will be really appreciated by our Philippine brothers,” it added.

The Philippines, especially several areas in Luzon, was greatly affected by flooding caused by rains brought by typhoons “Ondoy” (Ketsana) and “Pepeng” (Parma).

‘Modest support’

The WBC said it is just but “modest support to the great people of this extraordinary boxing country [Philippines]”.

The “WBC Asia Relief fund – Philippine Disaster” offers a circle key ring model double face key-ring: one face with Pacquiao and the back face with Cotto.

For five assorted key-rings, one has to pay $50 US plus shipping; 10 assorted keyrings, $95 US plus shipping; 15 assorted keyrings, $140 US plus shipping; 20 assorted keyrings, $185 US plus shipping; and 50 assorted keyrings, $450 US plus shipping.

Pacquiao himself pledged P1 million for those affected by the floods. He also went to Manila during his rest day to distribute relief goods. The pound-for-pound king is currently training in Baguio City.

In addition, he said he will dedicate his fight against Cotto to his countrymen, especially the calamity-stricken ones.

Even his promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions, pledged P1 million pesos for the flood victims.
The Pacquiao-Cotto “Firepower” bout will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cotto’s WBO welterweight belt will also be at stake in the fight.
