BAGUIO CITY — Top Rank president Bob Arum Sunday said that Manny Pacquiao can still fight even if he becomes a congressman next year.
“Manny has several good years left in boxing. He must first carefully study his options before declaring his retirement from boxing. We have several blockbuster fights lined up for him in the next two years,” Arm told reporters before leaving this mountain resort city.
Pacquiao is being groomed to run for the lone Congressional seat in Sarangani Province, hometown of his wife Jinky.
The famed international boxing promoter believes that it is too premature for Pacquiao to retire since he can maximize his remaining years in the sport.
While he poses no objection to Pacquiao’s political ambition, Arum said the pound for pound king has millions of fans who want to see him fight again no matter what happens to his bout with Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14.
“I think Manny will become the pride of the Philippines when he steps up into the ring as a fighting congressman.
Everybody will love to see him at that level. Nothing in boxing history has happened, thus, Manny will be making a record in such case,” the Hall of Fame promoter added.
Pacquiao’s next fight will probably held in March but will depend on the outcome of his fight against Cotto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
According to Arum, if Pacquiao wins in the next elections, he will still fight at least twice a year.
For his part, Deputy National Security Adviser Luis Chavit Singson, who accompanied Arum to the city, said they have been exhorting Pacquiao to concentrate first on his boxing career, but the desire to serve his constituents is pushing the boxing icon to join the political ring.
