Manny Pacquiao: The master of organized chaos

Bronx, NY - While walking around Yankee stadium, site of Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto's press conference on Thursday, September 9, I couldn't help but wonder about the current state of Pacland. I spoke to a couple of New Yorkers who happen to be Pacquiao fans as well and told them that the Pac Man was indeed going to be in the building on Thrusday. The news was greeted by excitement, which after a few seconds was met with concern as one of them asked me,

"I heard Pacquiao is having problems with his training camp? Will he be ready to fight in November?"

Ahh, I don't know if it's New York or this Pacquiao fan's inquiry, but somehow I was reminded of my fellow Examiner Michael Marley.

Relax Pacmaniacs, all is well in Pacland. Perhaps all this hysteria is nothing more than the byproduct of anxiety and anticipation coupled by a few of my colleagues stirring the pot of boxing's soup of the day fan base.

As if this is news at all.

Take it from the man himself, everything is fine in Pacland. In his recent article published by Philboxing.com, Pacquiao addressed his nervous-wrecked fan base and reassuring everyone that there is no rift between him and his trainer Freddie Roach. Also, Pacquiao reiterated that his training camp is going and will go on, right on schedule. If the Pac Man thinks he needs 8 weeks to be in tip-top shape, who are we to question him?

I never really put all that stock behind this whole Roach-Koncz bickering. Come on, they've been doing this since the beginning, it's nothing more than a right of passage within the Pacquiao camp. If anything, Koncz is a convenient scapegoat for Pacquiao to shoulder all the blame from decisions he would prefer doing anyway. Why do you think he still keeps the guy? I'm not saying Koncz is a saint or anything like that, but Pacquiao has his use for him. If you think Koncz dictates things to Pacquiao and Manny is nothing more than a naive kid who would say yes, then you as Pacquiao said it himself might know less about him than you think. And as far as all the turmoil surrounding this current camp, sorry folks, but I'm afraid the media has takes you guys for a ride.

What is the problem really? My main concern when I first wrote my article about the subject is whether Pacquiao would start training in time to meet the 8 weeks he said he needed. After his assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez's statements coupled by Pacquiao's recent article, it's enough for me to say that things are alright. I didn't say they're ideal or perfect, but it isn't all the crazy drama it's being put out to be either. The truth as they say, is somewhere close to the middle.

Roach will have his concern about the distractions that may come in Baguio, but Pacquiao is a professional and is still the boss after all. When the time comes that he doesn't give Roach the effort expected of him, then Roach can pull out then. Until that happens however, we can't jump the gun on him and neither can Roach.

At the end of the day, it's natural for people that care to worry. Roach is justified for doing so and as well as all you Pacquiao fans out there. Rest assured, and just as Manny said once again, so far, so good. Just another day being the most popular fighter in the planet. And as the saying goes, all publicity, is good publicity. Just ask Floyd Mayweather Jr.
