Pacquiao vs. Mayweather contract seems nearly impossible to draw
Manny Pacquaio vs. Floyd Mayweather will never happen, Bob Arum reportedly has said. You would think Mayweather’s resounding victory Saturday over Juan Manuel Marquez would make Pac-PBF all the more inevitable. Instead, Saturday’s mismatch made it more difficult to conjure a contract scenario for the match we all most want to see.
Neither guy seems eager to settle for 50-50, which, given their pas de deux atop the pound-for-pound rankings, makes the most sense.
But what if Manny were to fight to a draw with Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14, or if Pac-Man lost controversially? Might that enable him to accept 49.99 percent or slightly less to fight Mayweather without losing face -- and thereby cast himself as the grown man in this epic match-up?
(As if he weren’t already!)
Of course, if Pacquiao whips Cotto, he shouldn’t take a dime less than 50 percent. But do you think Mayweather, with “Dancing With The Stars” under his belt, is going to take the lesser half without any setback in the ring?
Abac Cordero of The Philippine Star sets forth in depth why Pacquiao-Mayweather might prove impossible to pull off. But Greg Haney of the Las Vegas Sun, the most centrally located beat man in boxing journalism, is just as certain it will take place in 2010, or shortly thereafter.
That doesn’t mean he shares my wacky Cotto-Pacquiao draw scenario. Anyone got a better one?
