Pacquiao vs. Cotto: Who the pro's are picking

Pacquiao vs Cotto Online Live Streaming
Pittsburgh Fight Sports Examiner | Scott Heritage

With the biggest fight of the year less than a week away, the prfessionals have been making their picks for the winner. Not surprisingly the results are unanimously in favour of Manny Pacquiao, but the role of underdog seems to suit Miguel Cotto just fine.

Personally I think the fight will depend largely on how much wear Cotto shows early on in the fight. A lot of people are counting him out because of the fact that he lost to Antonio Margarito and then struggled after that against Clottey.

If he really is as shop worn as he looked in his last fight, then it will be a short nights work for Pacquiao. If Cotto is back to his best however, then he may well have enough to bully the smaller man around and get the knockout.

Anyway, enough of my witterings, here's what the professionals think:

Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“I think Pacquiao is a quick starter, and if I had to lean toward a fighter, I would say Pacquiao."

Bernard Hopkins
“With Pacquiao's speed and Cottos wear and tear from the Margarito fight, I don’t think he has ever recovered,”

Oscar De LA Hoya
“I think Cotto is a smart fighter. I think he’ll get through those first few rounds and in a smart way he’ll walk down Pacquiao and possibly stop him in the later rounds,”

Joshua Clottey
"50/50 fight, when it comes to knockouts, Id give it to Cotto, when it comes to a decision Id give it to Pacquiao"

Israel Vasquez
"In my mind Cotto is the favorite because he has the strength advantage, maybe not the speed of Pacquiao, but he’s a very intelligent fighter and I think he has the advantage at the weight they are fighting at so I’m going with Cotto."

Manuel Medina
"I think it’s a very tough fight for Pacquiao because he’s going to another division and Cotto has the strength and the determination. The only way Pacquiao can win is if implements the perfect game plan and utilizes boxing skill to outpoint him. I think Cotto is going to win."

Greg Haugen
"I think Pacquiao is too quick for him. He has the speed on him. I think Cotto will have a tough time trying to catch him. It’s going to be tough to beat Paquiao and Floyd will beat Pacquiao because he has the speed. The only way to beat speed is with speed and if you don’t have it, you can’t find it."

Buddy McGirt
“I don’t think it is going to come down to either corner. These guys are veterans who know how to make adjustments while they are fighting. In that sense, Cotto is a better adjuster than Pacquiao, as he has had to do in several fights already. I don’t remember a fight (except the Marquez fight) when Pacquiao was in trouble like Cotto has been. I think Cotto can give Pacquiao trouble and then we will see how he handles it."

Andre Dirrell
"I love Pacquiao. He’s fast on his feet. One of the fastest guys I have ever seen on his feet and he has fast hands. He’s matured over the years and all that movement, bouncing and getting in and out and knowing how to use your power as well is amazing so I believe he is going to give Cotto another loss."

Yoel Judah
"I like Pacquiao. He’s faster and the better all around fighter."

Andre Berto
"I like Pacquiao. It’s going to be a good fight for Pacquiao, but at the same time, but if he doesn’t come on his game it might be a short night for Pacquiao."

Jim Gray (Showtime Boxing Analyst)
"I like Pacquiao. I just think he’s the best, he’s pound for pound the best. I know we are all pointing towards Mayweather and Pacquiao so I don’t want to see this upset that [fight] so the choice is with my head and my heart so I’m going with Pacquiao."

Mike Tyson
“Pacquiao will win.”

Willie Indio Chunke (Professional Cornerman & Cutman)
"I believe Cotto will take Pacquiao, he’s one tough dude."

Richard Steele (Promoter & Referee)
"I like Pacquiao because I think he is busier and I know the biggest fight in history will be Pacquiao and Mayweather so they both have to win."

Shane Mosley
"It's going to be an interesting fight, and I think Pacquiao better take him seriously."

Chad Dawson
"Pacquiao—he's the best, he's on top right now."

Chris Arreola
"I have to go with Pacquiao. Cotto is a great exciting fighter and all that and it has nothing to do with the Margarito fight and people say that took a lot out of him. Pacquiao is the faster fighter and I’m sure he will find a way to win the fight. Nothing against Cotto, I think he is a great fighter, but styles make fights and I think with Pacquiao’s style, he’s going to beat Cotto."

Antonio Margarito
"Pacquiao. From the very first round the advantage would be Pacquiao.”

James Bone-Crusher Smith
"I like Pacquiao. He’s busy and he can punch and I like his style."

Gabe Ruelas
"I’m going with Pacquiao and not just because he won all those titles. I still think he’s hungry. For champions as I was myself it’s very hard to stay hungry after you reach that goal of becoming world champion. There’s something different in Pacquiao, I see him getting hungrier. That will keep him there as one of the best fighters for a good while because he is still hungry."

Michael Dokes
"If I have to take a shot at, I’ll take Pacquiao. I’m going with Pacquiao."

Marquez's trainer Nacho Beristain
"I believe that Pacquiao should put him on the canvas in five or six rounds."

Angelo Dundee
"Cotto keeps coming, this other kid Pacquiao, is so good, so slick. I think Pacquiao is the best fighter right now.”

Mosley's trainer Naazim Richardson
"All of these guys underestimate Pacquiao thinking he's the small man. When I met Pacquiao, I wasn't saying how does this guy make welterweight? I was saying how in the hell was he making 130 and 135? Pacquiao is a big dude."
