Aspiring boxers up north may soon experience a first-class facility in Baguio City courtesy of reining world pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.
Pacquiao is said to be looking at opening a boxing gym in the Philippines’ Summer Capital after meeting several times with real estate tycoon Robert John Sobrepeña while training in Baguio.
A reliable source, who asked not to be named, said that Pacquiao and Sobrepaña agreed to put up the boxing gym inside the latter’s Camp John Hay project.
The same source said although both Pacquiao and Sobrepena, who is the chairman of the CJH Dev. Co., have not signed any formal agreement, the partnership is already a “done deal."
In such a short span, both gentlemen have formed a special friendship. In fact, the real estate tycoon is set to leave for the US next week to watch the six-time champion’s fight against reigning WBO welterweight champ Miguel Cotto live.
“Pacquiao and Sobrepeña are excited to start on this project," he said.
If in case it pushes through, the possible location of the gym could be at the Ampitheater area or the old theater used by the Americans in the 1970s and 1980s near the Scout Hill section inside Camp John Hay.
Baguio City is a favorite practice ground by boxers because of its thin air which is good for building stamina and resistance. – Adrian Flores, GMANews.TV
