Manny Pacquiao should be extremely nervous...about Jimmy Kimmel Show

LOS ANGELES--I think Manny Pacquiao should be getting nervous right about now.

Not so much about the fight against Miguel I'm No Angel Cotto two weeks hence because both he and the Boricua Banger will find the butterflies flying around in their stomachs before the opening bell. But, as the late ring philosopher Cus D'Amato used to say, only a fighter with no brain would have no fears.

I'm referring to Manny's under the hot lights appearance Wednesday night on the Jimmy Kimmel show.

As far as I can recall, this will be Megamanny's first outing on a nationally televised entertainment program where he won't be able to rely on his native language.

I bet promoter Bob Arum might be a bit nervous on this front as well but he would never admit it

All Manny really has to do is be himself because that will more than suffice. He should let Kimmel, the TV pro, lead and then all he has to do is follow.

For Pacman this is going to be like a kid riding a bike with training wheels. After this interview, all the rest will be easy.

In my limited experience, though, the Pinoy Idol comes off better in person speaking his second language of English than he does over the telephone.

Frankly, Pacman puts me to sleep with his sincere humility on those God awful international media conference calls. Manny comes across like a guy who can't wait for those painful media group gropes to end and I can understand that.

What journalist with half a brain wants to share a unique, probing or penetrating question and the hopefully interesting answer to same with everyone else?

I try to avoid those "and the next 47 questions are from Dan Rafael of ESPN" group calls like the swine flu.

In case you guys didn't know, Manny's Kimmel show appearance will have a small rehearsal.

An associate producer will visit with Manny in the "Green Room" where celebrity guests are coddled before it is time to go on stage.

That producer will lob a few softball questions to Manny to give him an idea of what Kimmel will be pitching at him.

And it's probable that the host himself with stop in to meet, greet and kibitz with Pacquiao before it's showtime.

I took Hurricane Peter McNeeley to the Jay Leno "Tonight" show and Leno put the Mike Tyson comeback opponent at ease with a five minute visit to the "Green Room."

My one experience at the David Letterman show was easier because they just had Oliver McCall, fresh off his stunning London KO upset over heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis, walk across the stage four or five times.

Everytime he did, wearing his green and gold WBC belt, the running gag was that Letterman would wrly intone, "The Atomic Bull, ladies and gentlemen, the Atomic Bull."

If I remember correctly, we didn't even get to meet Indiana Dave but then maybe he was getting busy playing tonsil hockey with one of his comely female associates. That kind of activity can lead to blackmail by jealous people you know.

The good news is Manny "breaking the ice" on a network show which is not about sports.

The better news is that he won't be grilled about health care reform, the public option controversy or whether America should pull a de la Hoya and quit on its stool in Afghanistan.

I hope Manny will favor the huge audience with a karaoke selection or two. That could be fun.

You can be sure Kimmel, a smooth operator, will lay gloves on Pacman.

But they will be kid gloves and not the mitts of malice that Senor Cotto is bringing into the ring on the 14th.

There won't even be any questions about the Michael Koncz-Alex Ariza bout in Manny's Baguio hotel suite.

I would love it, though, if Kimmel asked Pacman if he agreed with the biting, caustic and acerbic Arum that Manny's hotel was El Dumpo. To hear Arum tell it, Pacquiao's hotel was not fine for wild goats or domesticated donkeys.

I hear Arum is expanding his column and will shortly be writing for Hotels.com.

I hope Pacman's Kimmel outing is a big hit and that it shows his pleasing personality in the best way.

I know it won't be an unmitigated disaster.

People who don't know or care about the difference between a left hook and fish hook will get a glance at one of the most engaging figures in the entire sports universe.

I have a feeling Mr. Mayweather will get a mention or two as well.

You may be sure Money May will be watching over at the Big Boy Mansion in Vegas.

But he will never admit it, will he?
